Born in Scotland, Gerard Butler made his debut on stage at the age of twelve in the comedy Oliver, at the famous Kings Theatre in Glasgow. A student, he temporarily put his acting dreams aside to study law for seven years, before returning to the stage in London. In 1996, he won the lead role in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting. He then illustrated in pieces played on the London stage such as Snatch and Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams, alongside Rachel Weisz.

Not surprisingly, Gerard Butler is moving towards film sets, where professionalism is appreciated and noticed. In 1997, he won the lead role in the film The Queen of Windsor. In the same year he appears in the casting of James Bond Tomorrow Never Dies. In 2003, Gerard Butler co-starred with Billy Connolly in the movie Timeline, based on the book by Michael Crichton.

He also played alongside Angelina Jolie in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life. In early 2004, he participated in the Joel Schumacher film The Phantom of the Opera with Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson and Ciarán Hinds.

Gerard Butler became a major player with his interpretation of the bold and heroic King Leonidas in Zach Snyder's blockbuster film 300. This film broke all box office records on the first weekend of its release and has achieved a total of 450 million USD in revenue.

Although best known for his action movies and adventure, Butler can easily mix the records. In December 2007, he played in the romantic drama PS I Love You with Hilary Swank. Then, in March 2008, he was involved in the children's adventure film Nim's Island, alongside Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin.

In March 2010, Gerard Butler starred alongside Jennifer Aniston in The Bounty Hunter. He also lent his voice to Stoick, one of the main characters of Dragons, the Dreamworks animated film.

Future projects include Coriolanus which marks the directorial debut of Ralph Fiennes and Machine Gun Preacher, directed by Marc Forster.
